Evelyn M. Groff, age 79, of Lancaster went home to be with her Lord on Sunday evening at Lancaster General Hospital. She was the wife of the late J. Wade Groff who died in 1995.
Evelyn was born in West Earl Township, a daughter of the late Harvey and Bertha Herr Metzler. A homemaker, she helped her husband on the farm and also assisted him in the capacity as a pastor's wife. She was an active church member of Strasburg Mennonite Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, church historian, vacation Bible school teacher, and the church sewing circle. She volunteered for the Hans Herr House, Main Street Closet, and the West Lampeter Fair Kitchen Committee. Evelyn was also a former member of the Moments of Glad Tidings Choral Group. Mrs. Groff enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, and being active with a telephone visiting ministry.
Surviving are four sons, James W. married to Julie Witmer Groff of Ronks, John Harvey married to Yvonne Beiler Groff of Lancaster, Herbert E. married to Debra Frederick Groff of Lancaster, Richard E. married to Jennifer Clark Groff of Central, SC; 8 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; two sisters, Arlene married to John D. Hess of Harrisonburg, VA and Dottie married to Andrew B. Hess of Mt. Joy.
Funeral services will be held at Strasburg Mennonite Church, Village Road, Strasburg, PA on Thursday at 11:00 AM with John Meck, Steve Weaver, and Cliff Horst officiating. Interment will follow in the adjoining church cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 PM and again on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
