Enlisted Aug 23, 1862 as a private. Enlisted in Co A, Mass 53rd Inf Regt Oct 17, 1862. Mustered out Sep 2, 1863 at Camp Stevens, Groton, MA.

Enlisted Jan. 5, 1864 from Fitchburg with Co. F, Mass 57th Inf Regt. Mustered in / Promoted to Full Sergeant on Feb 18, 1864.

Reported Killed in Action: Mustered out May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia.

Described as 5 ft. 4.75 inches tall; dark complexion, eyes, and hair.

The widow's pension file (WC101282) contains two affidavits, including one from Lieut. Col. Julius M. Tucker, stating that he was killed by the enemy while on picket duty near Spotsylvania Va May 12, 1864.

While a resident of Sturbridge, MA, he married Nancy Arnold, of Woodstock, CT, at Thompson, CT on May 1st, 1853.

One son, John Eugene, born Oct. 29, 1839, is noted in the pension file.

Another source states he was reported missing May 13. Never accounted for and presumed killed.*


Note: The Fitchburg Sentinel stated [1901] that he was reported drowned on May 12, 1864 and buried in Virginia.
