Lulah AYER's parents were Gen. Lewis Malone AYER, Jr. (1821-1895) and his second wife, Lillie MOORE (1846-1919). Lillie's parents were the Rev. Thomas Verner MOORE (1818-1871) and Sarah BLYTHE (1816-1849).

Gen. AYER's parents were Lewis Malone AYER (1769-1863) and Rebecca IRWIN (1786-1864). Gen. AYER was first married to Anna Elizabeth PATTERSON (1825-1862). From that marriage, five known children were born. From Gen. AYER's second marriage to Lillie MOORE, four known children were born. Their names and years of birth are listed below.

On 17 Jan 1888, Lulah was married to James Robert VANDIVER (1860-1936). His parents were Augustus W. VANDIVER (1826-1863) and Mary E. PAGETT (1831-1890).

In 1928, the noted 318-page local history book TRADITIONS AND HISTORY OF ANDERSON COUNTY by Louise Ayer Vandiver was published in connection with Anderson's centennial celebration. It remains the definitive, most complete and most often cited history book ever written about Anderson County, SC and the surrounding areas. Marie Louise AYER VANDIVER is generally known as "The Historian of Anderson County."

CHAPTER VI. NEWSPAPERS AND WRITERS.

p. 89 General Lewis M. Ayer wrote for religious and agricultural magazines, and published one book, a religious one. Before the War Between the States, General Ayer was a political writer of some note. He also wrote some poetry, and one of his poems at least is a gem, "The Christian's Prayer." His daughter, Verna Ayer Akerberg, has written some graceful poetry. She is an artist and mosaic worker, and has spent most of her life abroad.
