Uriah "Duge" Nichols, 85, of Waco, passed away at a local hospital on Friday, March 28, 2003. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 31, at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors chapel with the Rev. Carrol Hambrick and Ivan Kerr officiating. Burial will follow at Gerald Cemetery. Visitation with family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Uriah was born to Joseph Thomas and Nancy Casey Nichols on July 13, 1917, in Ranger. He served as a sergeant in the 36th Division of the Army in WWII, landing in North Africa and then moving over to Salerno, Italy, on Sept. 9, 1943. He received a purple heart and was awarded a bronze star.

On Nov. 11, 1990, he wed Becky Sue Barber at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Waco. His parents, first wife, Lorena Nichols, two infant daughters, and a brother, J. D. Nichols, precede him in death.

Mr. Nichols is survived by his wife, Becky Sue Nichols of Waco; son, Joshua Nichols of Baytown; stepdaughter, Pamela Patton of Lindale; brother, Marion Woodrow Nichols of Rosenberg; sisters, Johnnie Bush of Crowley, Tracy Nichols of Clyde; grandchildren, Johnathan Nichols, Steven Nichols, Megan Patterson and James Pattson; and many nieces and nephews. He was a loving husband and Paw Paw and will be greatly missed.

Pallbearers are Johnny Barber, Phil Barnhill, Fred Blanchard, Bill Hardcastle, Jerry McDonald and Audaine Robinette.
