Robert Michael “Bobby” Dean passed away Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at home. Bobby was born June 20, 1918, to Henry Royal (Roy) Dean and Dolores (Dolly) Bruun Dean in Mancos, Colo.
He was the seventh of nine children. Bobby grew up in Mancos, where he and his brothers were known for their skills in basketball. Bobby made the all-conference team all four years of high school. He was a Mancos High graduate in the class of 1938.
He worked for the U.S. Forest Service until he was drafted into the Army in 1941. He served in the Pacific during World War II and then was recalled to serve in the Korean Conflict. He was discharged with the rank of Master Sergeant after serving a total of eight years overseas.
Bobby married Ada Matlock on July 22, 1946. They are the parents of six children. Bobby worked many years with the Franklin Life Insurance Company. In 1970, he moved the family from Brigham City, Utah to Cortez, Colo., after taking over the 7-2-11 Food Store there. Transfers moved the family to Farmington and then to Shiprock. After retirement in 1985, he and Ada moved to Kirtland and served two missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chicago, Ill., and at the Church Genealogy and Family History Center in Salt Lake City. All his life he enjoyed sports and followed his teams throughout their seasons.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ada Evelyn Matlock of Kirtland; one sister, Lilly Nelson of Jayson, Utah; children, Vic of Provo, Utah, Rick of Orem, Utah, Ron of Provo, Utah and Lori Bohr of Kirtland. He was also the very special grandpa to 23 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his four sisters Coralie, Emma, Vivian, and Catherine; and his three brothers, Adrian, Roy and Lynn, who was his life long hero. He was also preceded in death by two children, his son, Dennis Dean and his daughter, Roberta Shirley; one grandson, Joel Dennis Dean and a great-granddaughter, Hayden squiring.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on the Old Kirtland Highway, 473 CR 6100. Burial will follow immediately in the Mancos Cemetery.
