Born Katherine S. Schaecher in Lindsay, Nebraska, (the sixth of ten children) to parents Henry and Catherine (Ramaekers) Schaecher. In 1940, following the Great Depression, the family moved to Mt. Angel, OR in efforts to find work and promise of a better life.
Katherine fell in love and married Dennis G. Schaffner of Mt. Angel, OR on October 5th, 1948 and together raised a family of 11 children (6 boys and 5 girls) including a set of triplets.
Through the years the family moved about as work required, and in 1977 she settled in Lebanon where she finished raising her 3 youngest children and experienced the care and love of her church community at St. Edwards Catholic Parish. In 2003, as her eyesight began to fail due to Macular Degeneration, she returned to her longtime home of Albany where she resided at Alterra Courtyard Villas and Wynwood until the onset of dementia and eventually Alzheimer's required her relocation to Clarebridge in Salem.
Katherine is survived by her sons; Dennis Jr. and wife Jan of Keizer, Tim and wife Charlotte of Albany, Mark and wife Denese of Albany, Gary of Albany, Dale and wife Christine of Florence, Brad and wife Jeanne of Albany, daughters; Cindy and husband Art Neeley of Independence, Shelley and husband Charlie McAllaster of Albany, Sue and husband John Gent of Pasco, WA, Shirley and husband Steve Edmiston of Albany, Melanie Baker of Meridian, ID, 24 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, six siblings and Dennis G. Schaffner Sr. (her husband of 28 years).
