Houston Chronicle Obituary:
TRUDY WEIL SMITH, 84, died peacefully Wednesday, August 31, 2011, surrounded by her loved ones. Trudy leaves a rich and joyous legacy of love, courage, and adventure. She was predeceased by her parents, S. Ernest Weil (veteran of the German army during World War I) and Susan Wilhelmine Becker Weil, along with her sister Ursula.
Born January 22, 1927 in Ingenheim, Germany, Trudy and her parents and infant sister Ursula narrowly escaped the Holocaust when they came to the United States in 1938. Not all Trudy's loved ones were so fortunate to find a way out.
With the loving assistance and care of Sam Weil and his daughter Jeannette, they settled in Alexandria, Louisiana. Trudy graduated from Bolton High School in Alexandria, and attended Sophie Newcomb College at Tulane University, earning her B.A. degree in 1948. Following graduation, her father passed away and Trudy returned to Alexandria to run the family business. On August 31, 1960 Trudy married Robert (Bob) Smith. They lived briefly in Shreveport where Bob was assigned as a pilot and staff officer in the U.S. Air Force.
Their next move was to Ramey AFB in Puerto Rico, where their children Suzanne Emily (1962) and Ernest Randall (1963) were born. Trudy was quick to adapt to life in the military, enjoying many friendships. They were next assigned to Ellington AFB in 1965, uniting Trudy with her friends and family in Houston.
Upon Bob's retirement from Ellington AFB in 1967, they moved to Patchogue, New York, where they resided for the next 37 years. Trudy instantly became a very active part of the community. She was a long-time officer of the Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and active in other civic organizations. Trudy made many friends, played golf, attended a weekly bridge game and frequently traveled to New York City for the opera, symphony, Broadway shows and museum events. She loved to dance, shop, gamble, enjoyed boating, traveled throughout the world and had a very active social life. Amidst all of these passions, her primary focus always remained her family's well-being.
Trudy and Bob lived in Houston every December-April after Suzy and John Landa married in 1988. Trudy became very invested in the lives of her three grandchildren, Jennifer, Kimberly, and Daniel Landa, the loves of her life.
Despite various health challenges, Trudy embraced a zest for living that brought her happiness and left a mark on all who knew and loved her.
Trudy is survived by her husband Bob, her son Randy, her daughter and son-in-law Suzy and John, and her grandchildren Jennifer, Kimberly, and Daniel Landa. Our deepest appreciation goes out to Dr. Albert Raizner, Dr. Joshua Nguyen, Dr. Ernest Bilmes, Dr. Nadim Nasir, Dr. David Brown, Dr. Ian Sachs, Dr. Kenneth Lloyd, Dr. David Hayes, Nurse Practitioner Saundra Hendricks, Mr. David DeVito and to Trudy's extended family and multitude of close friends for their love and unwavering support.
There will be a Memorial Service for Trudy at Houston Congregation for Reform Judaism, located at 801 Bering Drive, 77057 at 2:00 PM, Sunday, September, 4th. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made in memory to charities of your choice.
