Death of Mrs. Heustis.
Elizabeth Heustis, wife of Zephaniah Heustis, died at her home near Manchester, in this county, on Friday night, July 11th, 1879, at 11 o'clock, in the fifty-third year of her age.
Mrs. Heustis was the daughter of Thomas and Roxanna Steele, and was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, May 21st, 1827. She came to this city with her parents when only a year old, and a short time afterwards, in 1832, she met with the sad misfortune of the death of her mother. At the tender age, therefore, of five years, being left without a mother, she was taken by a kind aunt, Mrs. Boone, known to many of our old citizens, and reared to womanhood, when in September, 1842, she was married in this city to Zephaniah Heustis, by the Rev. Windsor Smith of the Presbyterian Church. They were both quite young, but commenced life with a determination to succeed. They raised a good sized family, and accumulated considerable wealth, and in their advanced years were well fixed to enjoy life—but death came, and the wife and mother of the household was taken, and to-day sadness reigns in her stead.
Of the children living there are married Mrs. Peter Martenstein, Mrs. L. M. Dunn, Mrs. Pink Ross, and Mrs. Oliver Matthews. The two younger children, Flosy and Zephaniah, Jr., are respectively about fifteen and eighteen years of age. Warren Steele, her brother, living near Harrison, Ohio, is the only survivor of her mother's family, Warren and Steven West being her uncles, and brothers of her mother.
Mrs. Heustis had been a resident of Lawrenceburgh from her earliest childhood, and therefore was known by the most of our citizens. She was quiet and retiring in her disposition, and for several years past has confined herself very closely to her home and family. She was a faithful wife, a kind mother, and an excellent neighbor; and from her earliest days was a member of the Presbyterian Church; but after her marriage, Mr. Heustis being a member of the M. E. Church, she joined that church, of which she continued during her life a member, and in the end died in triumphs of Christian faith
Her funeral took place at the M. E. Church, in this city, at 2 1/2 o'clock on Sunday afternoon. The church was filled with sympathizing friends; the funeral sermon being preached by the Rev. M. L. Wells in a feeling and impressive manner. We have seldom, if ever, heard a better funeral sermon, and more forcibly presented. His text was 2 Timothy, chap. 1, verse 12—the dying declaration of Paul. Her remains were, followed to Greendale Cemetery by a large concourse of friends and acquaintances, and there deposited in the vault to await a proper time for burial.
