A gloom was cast over this community on Friday last when the sad news came that Miss Mabel I. Smith had passed away suddenly at her home in this place. Death occurred at about the noon hour. She had suffered from a goitre (sic) and heart trouble for about a year, which caused her death. She had been going about and on the day before her death had been out in the yard. That night she took worse about one o'clock and gradually sank until the end came.
Miss Maude Smith was well know by everybody in town and this community where she spent all her life. She had successfully conducted the millinery business here several years. She will be missed in the home and church. She was a consistent member of the Reformed church, being confirmed in her early teens by the Rev. S. L. Messinger. She was a teacher in the Sunday school, member of the choir as a soprano singer, corresponding secretary of the C. E. Society at the time of her death. She had served as organist and pianist of the different organizations of the church. While health permitted she was faithful in attendance at all services and at her duties. She kept the faith from her youth. She was a kind and thoughtful neighbor.
Maude Irene Smith was the daughter of the late George W. and Rebecca (Thomas) Smith, and was born at Blain, Nov. 18, 1873, died March 9, 1923, aged 49 years, 3 months and 21 days. Her mother died Dec. 7, 1906, and her father died Oct 23, 1912. R. M. Smith, general merchant, of this place, one of the firm of Smith & Stine, is her brother, and the only surviving member of her family. He has the deep sympathy of all. Her brother and wife did everything for her comfort for the duration of her poor health the past year.
The funeral was held on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, with services in the Zion Reformed church, conducted by the Rev. W. H. Miller, taking his text from Heb. 9:27, "And is is appointed unto men once to die." The Rev. L. D. Wible assisted in the services, reading the scripture and offering prayer. Interment was made in the new Blain cemetery. The pallbearers were members of her Sunday School class, namely: Paul Sheaffer, Harold Snyder, Lee Anderson, Emmett Gutshall, Roy Wilt and Floyd Shuman.
The funeral was largely attended by neighbors and friends to pay the last tribute of respect. Among the many floral tributes presented friends were two lovely sprays given, one by the Sunday school and the other by her class of young men in the Sunday school. Floral bearers were six girls of the Sunday school: Agnes Fleming, June Hench, Kathryn Hench, Stella Wilt, Bertha Anderson and Olive Snyder.
