The son of John Adams and Eleanor King Adams, in 1860, he was a clerk living in Philadelphia. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Wilmington, Delaware, August 11, 1862, and mustered into federal service there August 30 as a private with the Nield's Battery Light Artillery, aka 1st Delaware Light Artillery Battery. He is listed as a deserter from Camp Bradford. Baltimore, Maryland, December 18, 1862, but later discovered sick in Philadelphia. He is marked "present" on the April 10, 1863 special muster, and honorably discharged with his battery June 23, 1865.

He married Sarah P. "Sallie" Baines and fathered Carrie Baines (b. 02/16/1879 - married Harry Durbin Stoke).
