Pfc. Carl J. Baughman, 21, son of Charles Baughman, Oberlin, was killed on Iwo Jima February 19. He was attached to an engineering battalion and had seen action at Roi Namur, Saipan and Titian. He enlisted February 11, 1943 and trained at Parris Island, South Carolina, and Camp Pendleton, California and New River, North Carolina.
He had been awarded sharp-shooter medals and the Presidential Unit Citation.
Surviving in addition to his father, is a half-brother, Jacob Behney, Oberlin, and a half-sister, Mrs. Margaret Schenfelt, Harrisburg.
Pfc. Baughman worked at the Letterkenny Ordnance Depot before entering the service and during that time he lived on East King street, Shippensburg. He was employed by the LeRoy Roofing Company at Letterkenny.
