EAST BARRE – Luis Santa Maria, 95, a former longtime resident of Summer Street, died Saturday night, Oct. 30, 2010, at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin. His family had been at his bedside.

Born June 8, 1915, in Redstone, N.H, he was the son of Nicolas and Angelina (Fumagalli) Santa Maria. He graduated from Conway High School in Conway, N.H. in 1933.

A Veteran of World War II, Luis served as an aerial gunner and mechanic on B-17 bombers in the European Theater of Operations. During this time, he was awarded the EAME Ribbon with 4 Bronze Stars, the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Baseball immortal Joe DiMaggio was a squadron mate. He served from 1942 to 1945 and was discharged as a Technical Sergeant.

On May 26, 1946, he married Maria Rubalcaba in the East Barre Congregational Church. They had always made their home in East Barre. Maria died Oct. 21, 2001. Luis and his late brother-in-law, Marcelino "Chink" Rubalcaba had owned and operated Rubalcaba's Market in East Barre for many years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking. In earlier years, he was a pitcher for the East Barre Baseball Team in the Granite League after World War II.

His memberships included the East Barre Congregational Church, Granite Masonic Lodge #35 of Barre, and Mackenzie-Webster VFW Post #790 of Barre in which he was a life member.

Survivors include his son, Nicolas Santa Maria and his wife, Kathy of Barre; two grandchildren, Luis Santa Maria of Williamstown and Margaret Celley of East Calais; two great-grandchildren, Jacob Schultz and Hayden Santa Maria; two brothers, Angelo Santa Maria and Nicholas Santa Maria; and nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his brother, Rebaldi Santa Maria and his sister, Liberty Santa Maria.

His graveside service will be held at the convenience of his family in the Wilson Cemetery in Websterville. There are no calling hours.
