Chicago Tribune December 29, 1968:

C. H. ADAMS, 87, ONE OF PIONEER FAMILY, DIES

He Was Active in Many Civic Affairs

Cyrus Hall Adams Jr., 87, member of a pioneer Chicago family, died yesterday in his apartment at 1500 Lake Shore dr. Mr. Adams was a senior partner of the law firm of Isham, Lincoln & Beale, 72 W. Adams st. The firm was founded by the late Robert Tobb Lincoln, son of President Lincoln, and two associates.

He had been general counsel and a trustee of St. Luke's hospital prior to its merger with Presbyterian hospital. After the merger, Mr. Adams served as an honorary trustee of Presbyterian St. Luke's hospital.

Mr. Adams was a member of the print and drawing committee of the Art Institute and had served as vice president and was a trustee of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. His father was a pioneer grain merchant who came to Chicago from Virginia in 1857 and later became a member of the Chicago Board of Trade.

Family Origin Traced

Mr. Adams came from the Virginia branch of the family, as distinct from the Massachusett Adamses. The original American ancestor of his family, Robert Adams, came from England and settled in Campbell county, Va., in about 1706. Robert Adams' ancestors were closely connected with English nobility and his descendants ranked among the first families of Virginia.

Col. Robert R. McCormick, late editor and publisher of THE TRIBUNE, and Mr. Adams were cousins and shared July 30 as their birthdays, tho Mr. Adams was a year younger than Col. McCormick.

Family Famed for Statesmen

The southern branch of the Adams family has produced many distinguished statesmen, soldiers, and professional and business men.

The senior Cyrus Hall Adams helped found the Cyrus H. McCormick & Company, grain merchants. Its success led it to become one of the great grain companies of Chicago.

Mr. Adams Jr. maintained summer homes in Charlevoix, Mich., Greenville, Me., and Lake Forest.

Survivors Listed

He is survived by his widow, Alice Morse Adams; a son, Cyrus Hall Adams III, former Chicago school board member; and four grandchildren. His first wife, Mary Shumway Adams, died in 1962.
