Joseph was the son of John Hardwick and wife Susanna. He was one of six children born to the family.

Joseph married Elizabeth Toone April 30, 1807 in Lunenburg County, Virginia.

He And Elizabeth had Seven Children: John, Rebecca, Joseph, James, Elison, William, & Elizabeth.

By September 1818 Joseph & his family was living in Alabama Territory in Lawrence County, Alabama near Tennessee state line. He purchased Section 9 of Township 5South Range 7 West; Joseph Hardwick conveyed September 11, 1818 Certificate # 637.

Joseph was a Carpenter by trade, teaching the craft to all his sons.
In 1823 Joseph took James Riley as an Apprentice.

Between Joseph Hardwick and Margaret Riley both of Limestone County, Alabama. Margaret indentures her son James at the age of 12 on March 22, 1823, last to Hardwick as an Apprentice. James is to serve until 21 years of age. Hardwick is to instruct Riley in the building and framing of houses and other knowledge of carpentry trade. At the competion of the term Hardwick will furnish Riley with a carpenter set of Bench Tools and a new suit of clothes.

In November 1825 Joseph pruchased more land in Limestone County;
Range 5 South 7 West E 1/2 of NE 1/4 80.14 acres Joseph Hardwick September 11, 1818; Blm patent November 12, 1825.

In 1830 Joseph and his family are found in Limestone County, four houses away is brother inlaw John Elison Toone.
