Surrounded by his loving wife and daughter and friends, and following a year-long valiant and courageous fight with cancer, Doyle Hill passed away on Thursday evening, Nov. 8, 2012, at Hamilton Medical Center.

Doyle was born on April 1, 1941, in Apison, Tenn., but spent most of his childhood and youth in Ringgold.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Johnnie Hill, and by his brother, Don Hill.

Prior to his retirement, Doyle was a valued team member of Galaxy Designs, where he worked in carpet design.

Doyle will always be remembered by those who knew him for his selfless and sacrificial love for and dedication to his family. Doyle's loving wife, Annette Daniel Hill, survives him. Doyle and Annette would have been married 50 years in July 2013. They were married in the First Baptist Church of Dalton. Doyle and Annette stood as models of marriage and family life for many people, younger and older, in our community.

Doyle is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kendra and Lee Ballew of Dalton. Kendra and Lee and their three children, Kenlee, Brogen and Buc, brought immense love and joy to the life of their father and grandfather. These grandchildren will hold in their hearts sustaining memories of the acts of love that their grandfather shared with them. They have also learned, as they watched their grandfather in this past year, the importance of "finishing well" and of never giving up on difficult circumstances and being willing to struggle and fight to the finish. Doyle is also survived by his son, Ken Hill, who lives in Ohio; by his sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Jerry Williams of Rocky Face; by his niece and nephew, Jeff and Geneath Williams; and by other nieces and nephews.

Doyle's service to his church — First Baptist Church of Dalton — was a reflection of the love that he had for his Lord Jesus Christ. To his church and to the kingdom's work, Doyle also gave himself sacrificially. He was a valued member of the Cecil Johnson Sunday School Class. He assisted on many occasions on mission ventures led by this class and within the ministry of the church. As a church usher, each Sunday morning his loving smile and firm handshake greeted church members who attended the church's early service. He also served in other capacities at any time that he was called upon by the church.

Doyle loved the outdoors! A part of this love grew out of his lifelong love of sports. Doyle was an excellent athlete and excelled in any endeavors that he undertook in sports. Ringgold High School retired his high school basketball jersey and it is on display at the high school. He was also an excellent bowler. He was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Falcons. He greatly enjoyed times spent outdoors with his family on a variety of vacations over the years and specifically over the past several years as the family enjoyed family vacations at St. Simons Island. But, perhaps outside of his family and church life, nothing gave Doyle greater joy than fishing. He was an avid and expert fisherman. He participated in and won many fishing tournaments. Doyle had many great fishing partners, but he and his long-time friend, Gene Pendley, made one of the most formidable partnerships on the water!

Though quiet by nature, Doyle Hill's life's witness spoke loudly and with clarity to all who knew him. And, whether we called him husband, Daddy, Paps or our friend, we will all miss him tremendously.

A private funeral will be Sunday. The Rev. Dr. Bill Ireland and the Rev. Phillip Cannon will officiate the service.

The family will receive friends in the atrium of First Baptist Church of Dalton, 311 N. Thornton Ave., from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Burial will be at Whitfield Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Dalton.
