Raleigh Gibson, husband of Mary Cooper Gibson, died on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 1, 1936, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Harmon and Mary Jane Hilton Gibson. During his youth, he joined Macedonia Baptist Church. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. Prior to his retirement, he was employed with Georgia Pacific for 35 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Cooper Gibson of Sumter; daughter, Edith M. Gibson (Chalmus) Lowery of Lynchburg; three sons, Willie Gibson, Frederick Gibson and Royal Gibson, all of Sumter; four sisters, Rosetta (Jessie) Small and Margaret Milliner, both of Wedgefield, Ada (Henry) Cain of Maplewood, N.J., and Mary Waiters of West Orange, N.J.; and four grandchildren, Reginald Lowery, Chalmus Lowery, Keyanna Lowery and Breanna Gibson.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine Murray and Edna Rogers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Macedonia Baptist Church, Bloomville community, with the pastor, the Rev. Jonathan Mouzon, officiating, assisted by Minister Beatrice Mouzon, the Rev. Eloise Pompey, the Rev. Effie Hilton and Minister Sandra Pompey. Interment will follow in State Cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 860 Illery Road, Sumter.
