Roland Lucien Petit, 79, of Promenade Avenue, died Monday at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford from complications with emphysema. He was born in Biddeford on April 11, 1922, a son of John and Annie Caron Petit, and was educated in schools there, graduating from Biddeford High School in 1939. He began working at an early age delivering bread, setting pins at bowling alleys and doing other odd jobs to help support his family. Mr. Petit joined the U.S. Marine corps in 1941 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. In the battle of Guadalcanal, and enemy bullet pierced his helmet and creased his scalp. That frightening moment helped him to give thanks each day of his life. After the war, Mr. Petit purchased a home and started a small business, Annie's Variety in Old Orchard Beach, for his mother and younger brother and sisters. On April 12, 1945, he married Therese Dallaire at St. Andre's Church in Biddeford. He then started his own winterization and home improvements business, and served thousands of home owners during more than 50 years of operation. In the 1950's, Mr. Petit built a camp on the Ossipee Flowage in Waterboro. It became the favorite gathering and recreation place for four generations of the family. Over the next 50 years he was the undisputed camp champion of many fishing, horseshoe and card playing contests. Relatives say he was generous with advice and guidance to many friends and family members on a wide variety of personal and financial matters. Mr. Petit was a lifetime member of the AmVets, Knights of Columbus Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and several bowling leagues. His daughter, Pamela died in 1971. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, two sons, Michael of Saco and Dennis of Biddeford, two daughters, Nancy Twomey and Debra Robinson, both of Saco, two brothers, Paul of Old Orchard Beach and Ralph of Biddeford, four sisters, Lorraine Verge and June Champagne, both of Saco, Joanne Hughes of Corinna and Jacqueline Drown of Old Orchard Beach; 11 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
