Russell White was born on May 18, 1915 in Tracy, Minn as Howard Lester Greve. He was the only son of John Henry Greve and Sarah Lorene Skaggs. Howard lived in Kansas and Oklahoma as a young child and was a boy scout. He participated in a CCC camp 1933-1934 in Minnesota under the Forestry Department. He married Helen Wilson and had three children, Jack Greve, Ruth Greve and Kenneth Greve. In 1940, Howard changed his name to Russell R. White and his birth date and place. He married Marian Velfred Riley and had two children, Judith Raye White and Joseph Russell White. In 1940 he worked in Oklahoma on oil rigs until he enlisted in the Navy for World War II in April of 1942.

Between April of 1942- November of 1945 he served as a 1st class Torpedoman on PT boat. He was honorably discharged with a good conduct medal. He worked after the war in a variety of places, but for the longest at Link Belt Bearings as a chief powerhouse engineer where he retired in 1970. Russell died April 9, 1986 in Indianapolis at Winona Hospital after losing his battle to cancer.
