H. Rodney Hirtle 1924-2009

HIRTLE, Herbert Rodney - 84, Hirtle Road, Maitland, passed away July 26, 2009 at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. He was born in Big Lots, September 2, 1924 to the late Enos Albert and Evelyn Naomi (Oickle) Hirtle. As a young boy he helped his father on the family farm and worked in the woods. During the Second World War he served from 1942 -1946 in the army, stationed at London, England. Upon his return home, he went back to farming and being a woodsman. He later worked for Nova Scotia Light and Power and finally with Elmer Dorey and Son as a carpenter until his retirement. He was very active in his community and church. He was a member and served as Chief of the Maitland Fire Department; past president of the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. No. 49, Mahone Bay; a member of Christ Church Board of Management and Warden where he was also a teacher and superintendent of Christ Church Sunday School, Maitland. He was also there to lend a helping hand to his neighbours and friends. He loved his family with his whole heart, especially in later years his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought him special joy. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 63 years, Lena Millie (Ernst) Hirtle; son, Vincent (Linda), Hirtle Road; daughters, Marilyn Crook, Lunenburg; Sharon Wade (Emdon), Maitland; sister, Ruth McLain, Cookville; grandchildren, Nicole Clarke (Daniel), Dartmouth; Tracey Knickle (Jamie), Blue Rocks; Tanya Wade (Eric), Toronto; Mary Crouse (Marc), Voglers Cove; Michelle Wade, Maitland; great-grandchildren, Amber Knickle and Fayth Knickle, Blue Rocks; Ethan Clarke, Dartmouth; Savanna Wade-Amoha, Toronto. He was predeceased by a brother, Lomar Hirtle. A Royal Canadian Legion service will be held Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 6:45 p.m. followed by visiting hours, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. all in Mahone Funeral Home, Mahone Bay. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at Christ Church, Maitland, The Rev. Ian Wissler officiating. Burial will be in Christ Church Cemetery. A reception will follow in the Maitland Community Hall. Memorial donations may be made to Christ Church Restoration Fund or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Special thanks go to Dr. Heather Robertson and all the medical staff on the 4th floor medical wing of the South Shore Regional Hospital. Arrangements entrusted to Mahone Funeral Home, Mahone Bay
