A gloom of sorrow was cast over this community when when the news was received of the sudden death of Herbert Stambaugh, which occurred on Wednesday morning about 8 o'clock at his home in Madison township. He was employed in Harrisburg and came home to attend the picnic on Saturday. He took sick on Saturday night and became worse and passed away after three days' illness. His illness having developed into bronchial pneumonia.
Herbert was a young man well liked by all with whom he came in contact. He was a favorite among his companions and the respect in which he was held in the community was proven by the large attendance at the funeral. Thirty-five cars were in the funeral procession from his home. Two cars conveyed the beautiful and numerous sprays of flowers presented by his friends. Herbert had a host of friends, with whom we unite in extending our sincere sympathy to the sorely bereaved family in this dark hour of their lives. God works in a mysterious way and may they look to Him for consolation, who doeth all things well.
Herbert Dewey Stambaugh was a son of Andrew and Etta (Cooney) Stambaugh, and was aged 26 years, 3 months and 10 days at the time of his death. In addition to his parents he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Anna, wife of Edw. Stambaugh, of Harrisburg; Alda and Carrie, of Harrisburg; Wm. Lloyd, Stanley and Clarence, at home. He is also survived by two half-sisters, Ethel, wife of Ehlid Sensenig, of Harrisburg.
The funeral was held on Saturday morning with services conducted from his late home by the Rev. W. H. Miller. His remarks were based on the text found in Jeremiah 15:9 - Her sun is gone down while it is yet day. Interment was made in the new Blain Cemetery. Those who acted as the pallbearers were members of Camp Wild Cat Hunting Camp, of which he was a member. They were Alton J. Shumaker, John M. Lyons, John Roush, Dewey Mort, Samuel Shields and Frank Flickinger.
