Boat Capsizes, Man drowns

One man drowned and another seriously injured Saturday when a fishing boat capsized in the Columbia river at St. Helens.
Leland Burcham, 24, St. Helens, drowned, and George Domeyer, 21, Scappoose, was in St. Helens hospital. Thier fishing boat overturned when it attempted to go between the steamer Portland and a tanker it was towing, according to a coast guard report to the harbor patrol.
Coast Guard Gives Chase
Lt. Yeomans said coast guard boat No. 581, based in Portland but in St. Helens for the St. Helens salmon derby, started to chase the boat occupied by Burcham and Domeyer because it was operating in what seemed a reckless manner. The fishing boat rounded Sand island and started upriver in the Columbia river channel, where it met the steamer Portland. With the coast guard boat in pursuit, the fishing boat started down the port side of the steamer when it changed course and capsized. Burcham lost hold of the boat and drowned. Domeyer hung to the boat and was rescued by the coast guard.
