Fireman Apprentice (SS) James David Lear, 20, formerly of Washburn, was declared dead Tuesday (May 2, 1989) after an accident off the coast of Japan.

He was born April 13, 1969 in Spring Valley, a son of Robert R. and Georgene Gibson Lear. They survive.

Also surviving are one brother, Robert G. Lear; one sister, Pamela Heren; maternal grandmother, Alpha Gibson and a steppaternal grandmother, Carolyn Lear.

He was a 1987 graduate of Lowpoint-Washburn High School, where he was a member of Future Farmers of America. He attended Washburn United Methodist Church.

Mr. Lear entered the U.S. Navy in December 1987 and was assigned to the Great Lakes Technical Center and later to Groton, Connecticut for submarine training.

He had been serving on the USS Barbel at the time of his death.
