Edmund Morris, better known as Sam Hicks, who died Aug. 2, was the son of John and Emeline Morris. He was born near Chardon, Ohio, June 17, 1849. He was 65 years 1 month and 16 days of age. He came to Illinois with his parents in 1851. He spent most of his childhood days near Keithsburg and Alexis. The family moved to Green township, two and
one-half miles northwest of Viola, in 1865. He lived here until 1873, when when he was married on Feb. 20 to Martha Vashti Hubbard of Joy. With the exception of two years spent near Preemption he lived the remainder of his life near Viola. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his death, two children, Thomas Edmond and William Alexander, having preceded him in death. Those living are Alice E., Mrs. Maude Beard, John T., Fred, Robert L., and Florence. Of his father's family there remain his twin brother, Edwin, of Appleton, Minn.; Mrs. Clara E. Everett of Inglewood, Cal., and Mrs. Ida Tomlison and Mrs. Cora Andersen of Belgrade, Neb. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Grant Pinkerton, assisted by Rev. Marrow and Rev. Barnes at the United Presbyterian church at Viola at 2 o'clock Tuesday, August 4. The interment was in the Viola cemetery.
