A lifelong resident of Virginia Beach, he was born in Suffolk on Sept. 8, 1938 to the late Charlie Carson Rawls and Mildred Channell Rawls.
Besides his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Joyce Sawyer Rawls, he is survived by his very caring extended family who loved him very much, Mary V. Williams Sawyer, Addie Sawyer VanderMel and husband David, William E. (Bill) Sawyer and wife Phyllis, Mary Sawyer Easter and husband Elgia and Grace Sawyer Woody and husband David. In addition, he is survived by a host of nieces and nephews who were his special children and an aunt, Margie Bleiler.
He was retired from the City of Virginia Beach. Johnny, as his acquaintances knew him, was a very loyal and active member of St. John's Baptist Church. A deacon in the church, he was very involved in its activities. An accomplished soloist, he was a member of its Praise Band and Adult Choir. He was also a member of its properties committee. In addition, he was a past Sunday school officer and teacher. His enthusiasm for life extended to his love of bowling and his penchant for exercise and his love of walking.
A funeral will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in St. John's Baptist Church, 2300 Holland Road, Virginia Beach with the Rev. John Williams and the Rev. Joe Moffitt officiating. Interment will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park, Great Neck Road. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Maestas Funeral Home, Baltic Avenue Chapel, Virginia Beach, where the family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Building Fund of St. John's Baptist Church.
