Zacharia Coipuram - Investment Officer. Zacharia "Zach" Coipuram, 38, an investment officer for International Finance Corp. who planned to enter religious life, died of cancer Jan. 13 at Georgetown University Hospital. He lived in Falls Church.

Mr. Coipuram worked for IFC, a World Bank subsidiary, from 1996 to 2005, helping to develop new businesses, processing new investments assisting Third World countries and monitoring investments in IFC's portfolio.

He left that employment in summer 2005, intending to serve the poor as a Capuchin Franciscan friar. But as he was about to enter the order, he learned he had cancer, which precluded his plans.

Mr. Coipuram was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the son of immigrants from Kerala, India. When he was 7, his family migrated to the United States and settled in Northern Virginia.

He graduated from Bishop Denis J. O'Connell High School in Arlington County and from Catholic University, where in 1989 he won the Mickey Leland scholar's award for outstanding senior. In 1992, he received a master's degree in business administration from Virginia Tech. For the next four years, he worked for the Defense Logistics Agency.

He volunteered at Alexandria's Christ House, a homeless shelter that provides food, clothing and monetary and medical assistance to the needy.

A philosophical man with a thirst for knowledge, Mr. Coipuram loved books on philosophy, theology and comparative religions. An outdoorsman, he traveled worldwide, including a trip to Nepal, where he climbed 17,000 feet to a Mount Everest base camp. He also loved sports, playing rugby in college and rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Survivors include his parents, Thomas and Grace Coipuram Sr. of Falls Church; a sister, Juliet Coipuram of Arlington; and a brother, Tom Coipuram Jr. of Fairfax County.
