Sam Hope's skeleton was found about 7 miles east of Benton over the Chilhowee mountain in January 1930. He had left home some 40 months earlier searching for gold he thought was hidden by the Indians in the Chilhowee Mountains. He was 74 years old.

His skeleton was found by Ed Harrison and J. M. Guinn who brought county officials who identified the body by the magnetic prospector's outfit and his fishing gear. They buried the remains in a shallow grave and set a stone crudely inscribed 'Sam Hope".

He is the only burial in this 'cemetery'.
