Born April 27, 1915, to Ed and Lelia Combs in Clinton, Mo., Doris graduated from high school when she was 17. She finished a two-year degree before beginning her first teaching job in a small town in Missouri.

She married James McGuire on Aug. 17, 1941, and moved to Oklahoma the following year when her husband left to serve in World War II.

During the war, she worked as a parts inspector at Tinker Field in Midwest City. When her husband returned home, she finished her college education at Oklahoma Baptist University. They had children John and Lelia.

Doris taught more than 25 years for Tulsa Public Schools, with most of those years at the former Burbank Elementary School. While overseeing her sixth-grade class, she developed the first curriculum for the history of Tulsa.

After she retired, she was often asked to give guest lectures at area schools on the city's history. She also performed her Tulsa history lesson each year for the University Village retirement community talent show.

She volunteered for the Oklahoma Baptist Children's Home, the Tulsa Garden Center and the Tulsa Historical Society, and she led tours at Gilcrease Museum. Even in her last days, she concluded each luncheon with a small history lesson.

Doris died June 7, five days after having a stroke. She was 95. She had a brother Edgar Jackson Combs, Jr. who died in 1990 in Fresno, CA. and another Miles J., who died in 1999 in Tucson, AZ.

The McGuires were active members of the First Baptist Church of Tulsa.

After her husband's death in 1999, she moved to University Village, where she became a chapel attendant and played bridge several times a week. She made sure to visit those who were ill and took baked goods to all newcomers to the retirement community.

She lived by a saying on a card she kept posted: "Do something nice for someone every day".
