son of George Tait, who was cousin of Archbishop Tait, of Canterbury, England.

Graduated from Woodward College, Cincinnati in 1850 and from Bethany College, Virginia in 1852. He then went to Florence, Italy and studied painting there for three years. In 1850 he went to Dusseldorf, Germany, and studied there and in Munich until 1871. He married Miss Anna Dolores Tiernan of Baltimore, on December 1872.

He was well known in Baltimore for his landscapes paintings, one of which was owned by Mr. George R. Vickers. He also painted a portrait of Judge Hugh L. Bond for the Athenaeum Club.
