"Our citizens were startled last Friday morning with the announcement that Mr. Allen was dying. He was recovering from his severe accident, and on Thursday seemed remarkably well and cheerful. The sudden change occurred about ten o'clock, Thursday evening. All hope of his recovery was immediately abandoned. He suffered no pain, and continued in the full use of his mental faculties until the last. He expired at 9:40 a. m., without a struggle. Mr. Allen was born at Middlefield Centre in 1820. He lived there until 1853 when he removed to Albany. After spending nearly four years in that city, he returned to his native place. He continued to reside at Middlefield Centre 'till '66, when he removed to Worcester to engage in mercantile business. Since then he has been an honored citizen of this village. Mr. Allen's chosen occupation was that of the merchant ... He was married to Miss Harriet Huntington at the age of twenty-six. Three daughters were born to them, ---two of whom are living to mourn his loss with the afflicted wife and mother." [The Worcester Times (Worcester, NY), May 3, 1878, pg. 2, col. 5]
