Curtis was the son of Andrew J. Poag and Lucinda F. Sanders. The town of Poag in Madison County, Illinois was named for Curtis' parents who were pioneer settlers in Chouteau Township.

Curtis married Augusta Ebeladge on on 18 Nov 1902 on her parents' farm in Wanda. They were the parents of 4 children, and he was a farmer in Madison County.

He became ill in February of 1940. By that September, his condition became serious. He was bedfast for the final 2 weeks of his life.

Curtis passed away at his home at the age of 64 years, 1 month and 6 days. He was born and spent his entire life on the farm where he died.

He was survived by his wife, Augusta; 3 daughters, Ruth Poag, Evelyn DeCota of South Roxana, and Virginia Mathewson; 1 grandson, Duane DeCota; 1 brother, Hugh F. Poag of South Roxana; and 1 sister, Eva Poag Smith of South Roxana.

In addition to his parents, Curtis was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Myrtle, who died in infancy.

Visitation was held at the Marks-Weber Funeral Home in Edwardsville. Funeral services were conducted there at 2 p.m. on 12 Nov 1940.

Curtis' wife, Augusta, passed away in 1945 and was buried next to him.
