Harry Gonshor dies at 62; taught math at RU for 33 years.

HIGHLAND PARK - Harry Gonshor died Wednesday at Medical Center Hospital of Vermont in Burlington from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was 62.

Gonshor was born in Montreal, Canada and lived in Los Angeles and New York City before moving to Highland Park 30 years ago.

He was a mathematics professor at Rutgers University since 1958.

He received his bachelors and masters degrees from McGill University in Montreal in 1948 and 1949, respectively. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1953.

He was the author of many books and articles. His last book, "Introduction to Surreal Numbers," was published in 1986. He received the Putnam Award for mathematical achievement in 1947 and 1948. He was a member of the Society Sigma XI. He was an internationally acclaimed Go player - a mathematical game - and a member of the Manhattan Go club.

Surviving is a son, Elliot Gonshor of Milltown.

Funeral services will be today at 3 p.m. at the Crabiel, Harding and Jamison Funeral Home, 239 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick. Burial will be in Franklin Memorial Park Cemetery, North Brunswick.
