Don Carlos Parker, 83, passed away Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012 at the Bear Lake Memorial Hospital due to complications of diabetes. He was under the watchful care of his wife, Merrilyn Brown, his seven living children and Dr. Jack Clark. Don was born to Carlos Parker and Hilda Morgan Parker on Feb. 26, 1929 in Lanark, the oldest of four sons. He married Roma Nield on Nov. 14, 1951 in the Logan Temple. She died Feb. 22, 1999 after she and Don had raised a large family, loosing one sweet 18 month old daughter, Carla, to pneumonia in 1959.
On Aug. 10, 2001, he married Merrilyn Brown in Montpelier. They were married for 11 years.
After graduating from Fielding High School, in Paris, Don attended the University of Idaho at Moscow, where he graduated with a degree in soil sciences.
Don was in the US Air Force ROTC and served on Johnston Island in the Pacific at the end of the Korean conflict. After completion of his service, Don and Roma lived in Salem Ore. where he worked for the USDA in soil science. They then moved to Montpelier to raise their growing family. He co-founded the OK Tire Store with his father-in-law, LaVar Nield, on Fourth St. in Montpelier.
Don is survived by his wife, Merrilyn, his children, Janice (Jim) Taylor of Salem Ore., Jim and Tara of Ovid, Carla Jean (deceased), DK and Kaylene of Montpelier, Susan (Orval Harris) of Montpelier, Terry and Laura of Ovid, Gary Parker and Mike Benzon of Salt Lake and Teresa Singleton of Montpelier; 24 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and brothers David Deloy (Myrtle Rae) Parker of Pocatello and Merlin (JoAnn) Parker of Montpelier.
He was preceded in death by his wife Roma Nield, his daughter Carla Jean, great-granddaughter Kanatha Soper, brother Larry Parker, his parents Carl and Hilda Parker and his wife's parents LB and Rhean Nield.
Don enjoyed working with the Priest of the Montpelier Third Ward for 20 plus years. He served as a counselor in two bishoprics and sang with the Men of the Valley Chorus.
Don designed and contructed a gas Dutch oven cooker used for the Oregon Trail Rendezvous in Banks Valley where 700-800 people were served prior to the pageant. Dad had a delightful laugh, we will miss him.
Funeral Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Montpelier Stake Center on Fifth St. in Montpelier. A viewing will be held from 11-12:45 a.m. prior to the services. A viewing will also be held Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Matthews Mortuary (702 Clay Street, Montpelier).
