Everett Alms, 87, of Mattoon, died at 9:27 p.m. on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, at Mattoon Health Care & Rehabilitation.

Funeral services honoring his life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the St. John's Lutheran Church, 200 Charleston, Ave., Mattoon with Reverend Troy Countryman officiating. The Schilling Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Burial will follow at a later date in the Janesville Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday November 10, 2012, at the church.

Everett was born on May 12, 1925, in Steeleville, Illinois, the son of Henry and Anna (Gerberding) Alms. He married Hilda L. Jenkins on March 28, 1948.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert Alms.

Survivors include his wife, Hilda Alms of Mattoon; daughter, Dixie Lee Alms of Juneau, Alaska; sons, David Alms and wife Jonnie of Mattoon; Brad Alms and wife Kathy of Mattoon; brother, Wib Alms and wife Ioan of Chester; sister, Helen Holm of Steeleville; 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Everett was a Physical Plant Director at Eastern Illinois University for 23 years. He was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Mattoon. Everett served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a member of the local V.F.W. and the American Legion.



MATTOON — The graveside service for Everett Alms was Wednesday at Janesville Cemetery with the Rev. Troy Countryman officiating. Schilling Funeral Home in Mattoon was in charge of the arrangements.

Military honors were conducted by VFW Post 4325. Participating members were: Detail Commander, Ed Davis; Chaplain, Wayne Cox; Bugler, Bill Miller; Color Guard, Mike Gavis, Ray Hoffman; Firing Squad Commander, Bill Thornton; Firing Squad, Gene Crean, Murphy Hott, Zach Grafton, Harland Latch, Rick Blagg, Bill Nash and Tuny Cox.
