Patricia spent her early years playing baseball with the boys in her neighborhood, singing in the church choir and yearning for adventure. In 1943 she joined the WW II war effort by enlisting in the U.S. Woman's Army Corps (WAC) and serving as a personnel clerk at the rank of corporal until April 1945.
Patricia and Spencer Muir Crump were married in late 1944, their union producing four sons in quick succession. They settled in Burbank, California where Spencer opened a practice as an oral surgeon in the nearby town of Glendale.
Patricia became a working single mother when her youngest child was four years old and due to her natural leadership abilities, rose quickly to a position of responsibility at a large dental clinic in Hollywood, California supervising the support staff. Patricia was fondly known as "the Colonel" by those that worked with her. She then continued to work as a dental claims reviewer and examiner in various Taft-Hartley Trust Funds throughout Southern California until her retirement in 1994.
Through lifelong friendships forged as a young mother, Patricia was able to provide her four young boys with travel and learning experiences, including cross-country trips in a 1957 station wagon, camping along the roadside; those trips expanded their horizons and gave them priceless memories.
After spending most of her adult years in Southern California, Patricia was able to return to her beloved hometown of Gaffney, South Carolina in 1994 at the age of 72, where she lived for ten years. She then returned in California in 2004, first to Northridge, then Modesto in 2007, where she made many new friendships, including those at her retirement community of Neighborhood Manor. She and her dog, Chico, were often seen walking throughout the community.
Patricia is preceded in death by her son, Richard Muir Crump, and grandson, Kelly Lawrence Crump.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Eleanor Meredith of Boerne, Texas; sons, Ronald Muir Crump (Rebecca), Modesto, California, Ramsey Muir Crump, Portland, Oregon, and Robert Muir Crump (Sharon), Northridge, California; grandchildren Robert Muir Crump, II (Lee), Meredith Crump Loke (David), Spencer Ashley Muir Crump and Cameron Elliott Crump; two great grandsons, one great granddaughter; and numerous nephews and nieces.
The family wishes to express its deepest appreciation to the staff and doctors of Kaiser Permanente Modesto and Community Hospice for their outstanding and compassionate care in Patricia's final days.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Neighborhood Manor Chapel, 1200 Woodrow Avenue, Modesto, California on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.
Final interment will be in the Meredith family plot at Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney, South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice Foundation, Modesto, California or to the American Cancer Society.
