Kokomo, Miss. Spc. James A. Chance III didn't want his counterparts with spouses or children to risk themselves driving through dangerous territory in Iraq, family pastor Jimmy Jones said. So the Mississippi National Guardsman volunteered to lead his convoy. "He would do without so that someone could have. That's the way he was raised," older brother Allen Chance said. The 25-year-old from Kokomo, Miss., was killed Nov. 6, 2003, when his truck hit a land mine near the Syrian border.Chance usually stayed close to his parents' home, helping to care for his father, in a wheelchair, who had served in Vietnam. The last conversation Allen Chance had with his brother was about their ailing grandmother. "He was worried about her and he was trying to get it where he could come home for a few days to see her," he said. "He never could get around to it." He is survived by his father, James Jr., and his mother, Patricia Ann. ∼He is the son of James and Ann Summer Chance II. He is the Grandson of Edward Earl and Virginia Beyers Summer and great-grandson of Oscar B. and Carrie Harris-Summer All of Kokomo,Ms.∼From the porch of James A. Chance's mobile home, you can see his namesake.

There he says, is his son-- the one who got his father's dark hair and broad forehead; the one who followed Daddy and Granddaddy into the military; the one who would one day pass on the family name to a fourth generation.

There across the street, beyond a grove of tall oak trees, where grey stones rise from a field of green grass.

There where a pentagon-shaped marble headstone bears the inscription, "Army Spc. James A. Chance III."

"When Jimmy died,", the father says, "the name died, too, I reckon."...

He died Nov. 6, 2003 near Husaybah, Iraq, when a landmine exploded under the truck he was driving. He had volunteered to lead the convoy - he told his commander, "I am single. If something happens, I don't want it to happen to somebody who has a wife and children."
