Delsie Meierhenry Fulfilled Dream of Raising a Family
by Betsie Freeman - World-Herald [Omaha] Staffwriter
August 9, 2003

Despite a rough beginning, Delsie Meierhenry lived out her dream.
When Delsie was 2 years old, her mother died, so she was sent to live with four aunts and an uncle in Winslow, Neb. "That made her very focused on her plans to marry, raise a family and contribute to her community," said son Dwight of Las Vegas.
"Those were really her goals, and I think she got to all those places," he said.
Along the way, she obtained a teaching certificate from Western Union College in LeMars, Iowa, taught school in several locales and married Wesley Meierhenry, her high school sweetheart.
Delsie Meierhenry's life will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at Westminister Presbyterian Church in Lincoln. She died Aug. 1 in Las Vegas at age 88 after a long illness.
Delsie graduated from Fremont High School, where she met her future husband at a basketball game. They married in 1937 and settled in Republican City, Neb. She was a teacher and he was the superintendent of schools.
The couple moved to Lincoln in 1943 when gas rationing cut into Wesley's commute for graduate studies. He went on to a 50-year career as a professor of continuing education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Delsie then retired from teaching.
"Mom raised the Victory Garden and the children," Dwight said.
She also is survived by sons Kent of Caswtro Valley, Calif., and Redge of Helena, Mont.; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
