Norma Jean (Fischer) Sohl, died July 2nd, 2011 at home in Topeka, Kansas at the age of 81. She was born July 14th, 1929 in Lincoln to Ben and Berneice Fischer. Her father was a juvenile officer and police detective and her mother a business woman, seamstress and active in community service in Lincoln. Norma graduated from Lincoln High School in 1947 where she was valedictorian for her graduating class, and attended the University of Nebraska.
Devoted to God and family, Norma married Stanley D. Sohl of Lincoln in 1948 and moved six years later to Topeka. She earned her Bachelor's of Education from Washburn University in Topeka and her Master's of Science from Kansas State University specializing in Learning Disabilities. This she accomplished while teaching at Highland Park and McCarter Elementary Schools, and raising five children. Norma was a member of the Honors Society of Phi Kappa Phi and Tau Delta Pi.
She taught in the Topeka school system for 28 years and she spent her summers being and wonderful mother and grandmother. Norma devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to family members. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, camping, boating, and travelling to spend time with her children and grandchildren. Norma was an avid swimmer and fitness walker. She attended the Topeka Bible Church and Bible study at Brookwood Covenant Church. She was a member of the Philomethian Club of Topeka and the Topeka Teachers Association.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents and ex-husband. She is survived by her brother, Ronald (Helen) Fischer of Lincoln; her five children, Duane (Laura) Sohl, Jeanine (Ilan) Eldar, Glen (Terri) Sohl, Martha (Tom) Bertolino, and Mark Sohl; grandchildren, Nicole Sohl, Bryan and Michael Bertolino, Koren and Talore Eldar, Sarah Bloxsom, Laura (Donald) Gloeckner, and Alex McKinsey; six great-grandchildren; nieces, Lorraine, Joyce and Lynda Fischer; nephew, Timothy Fischer; and five cousins in Lincoln.
Visitation will be held at Wadlow Rozanek Funeral Home 5200 'R' St., Lincoln from 6 - 8 p.m. Friday, July 8th, 2011. Funeral Service: 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9th, 2011, at Christ United Methodist Church, 4530 'A' St., Lincoln, with a reception following the service. Graveside service will follow at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Norma's behalf to Grace Hospice, 3715 SW 29th St., Ste. 100, Topeka, KS 66614.
