Sara Saragusa Rawlins Roux passed away at Heritage Health Center on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at the age of 86.

She was born in Sweetwater, LA on January 18, 1926.

Her parents were Rosa Junta Saragusa and Gasper Saragusa, who were Sicilian and Italian immigrants respectively and preceded her in death.

She was the tenth of fourteen children and was preceded in death by siblings Sam, Frank, Joe, Tony, Mary Miceli, John, Bernadette Labate, Mathilda Miceli, Russell, Lucille Musso, Dominick, and August. One sister, Josephine Burhoe of Maine is her sole surviving sibling.

Also preceding her in death are her first husband, Robert Lee Rawlins, Sr., husband Bertrand Eugene Roux, and son Robert Lee Rawlins, Jr. She is survived by two daughters, Deborrah Rawlins and husband Mike Lee and Orlisa Roux and husband Wesley DePhillips of Loranger. She also leaves behind a legacy of 9 beloved grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Always hard-working, her first job was working behind the soda fountain in K & B in New Orleans. She was also a can inspector and welder during World War II. Afterwards, she worked as a waitress, dental assistant, cosmetologist, and cosmetology instructor. She owned and operated the Deb-Lisa hair salon, named after her two daughters, in Harahan and Sweetwater. She also owned and operated "The Country Store" for four years in Sweetwater.

Loving, generous, strong and spirited, she served God by serving others. She never met a stranger and loved people regardless of their nationality, race, religion or age. If they were in need, she helped them. When the state tried to close Lallie Kemp Charity Hospital years ago, she appealed to Governor Edwin Edwards and led a campaign to keep it open. She drove family, friends, and neighbors to doctors' visits, chemotherapy treatments, and to visit loved ones.

Devoted to her parents, she invited them to live with her family when they became elderly. Her brother Frank spent his last days with her. When her sister-in-law, Sue, passed away, she opened her home to her children, Russell, Alice, and Joe Saragusa. It is impossible to share all of the kindnesses she performed, many of which she never spoke although she was a delightfully gifted story-teller.
Mrs. Roux was also very civic minded and ran for justice of the peace in the 1970's barely losing to the long-time incumbent. She was a member of the American Legion, the order of Amaranth, and was a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Of all her many activities, Mrs. Roux loved sharing her faith best. When she was well, she was an active church member. She also conducted a weekly praise and worship radio broadcast from Amite for many years.

She will be sorely missed, but she leaves behind her a legacy of generosity, laughter, and unfailing love.

Visitation will be at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond on Saturday, November 10, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. until the services begin at 1:00 p.m.
