Mrs Lustig, 90, Dies

Mary Elizabeth Lustig, 90, a resident of the Green Creek area for 68 years, died at 3:40 pm Sunday, Oct. 10, at her Green Creek home.

Mrs Lustig was active in Church affairs all her life and was named Idaho Catholic Mother of the Year in 1954. She was a member of St Anthony Church at Green Creek and had attended mass there in her wheelchair a week before her death. Her son, the Rev Victor J. Lustig, is pastor of the Church. Mrs Lustig had been housekeeper at the rectory since 1969.

Mrs Lustig was born July 15, 1886, at Lillyville, Spring Point, Cumberland, Illinois, USA, the daughter of Henry and Sophia Jansen. She attended school at Highland Grove, Illinois, USA., met and married Victor G. Lustig there on Feb. 12, 1907.

They first settled at Barnesville, Minn., where Lustig had a homestead. The first of their 11 children was born there. The next year they moved to Green Creek, where Mrs Lustig's brother, Anton Jansen, lived.

The Lustigs settled on a ranch at the foot of Rocky Butte, located equal distance between Cottonwood, Green Creek and Ferdinand. Mr. Lustig was a stock and grain farmer and founder of the Cottonwood Elevator. He also helped start the Cottonwood Sales Yard.

The Lustigs retired from farming in 1959 and moved to Cottonwood. Mr. Lustig died in 1966. Three years later, Mrs Lustig moved back to Green Creek. Mrs Lustig celebrated her 90th birthday in July at the home of her daughter. Zita Schmidt of Cottonwood, with most of her 63 grandchildren and 85 great-grandchildren attending.

Survivors include six other daughters. Rita Wimer, Dolores Seubert and Sister Mary Mildred, all of Cottonwood. Louise Welch and Agnes Schmidt of Clarkston, and Loretta Reeve of Spokane; two other sons, John A. Lustig of Cottonwood and Lambert Lustig of Green Creek; and one brother, Leo Jansen of Highland Grove, Illinois, USA. A daughter, Bernadine, died in 1924.

Rosary was recited at 7 pm Tuesday at the Uhlorn Funeral Chapel. A second rosary service was held at 8 pm Tuesday at St Anthony Church at Green- creek.Funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St Anthony Church, with her son as the principal celebrant. Burial was at the Green Creek Catholic Cemetery.
