Annette Therrien Brandes, Ph. D. 68, formerly of Minneapolis and Grand Rapids, currently of Askov, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, on the hospice unit of St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth after suffering from a prolonged illness. Annette died quietly with her sister, Annelle, by her side.
Annette was preceded in death by her parents, Fredrick G. and Geneva Brandes Sr. and their infant daughters, Marilyn and Betty jean.
She is survived by her sister, Annelle and husband Pat of Askov; and a brother, Fredrick G. Brandes Jr. and Elizabeth Edelman, Las Vegas, Nevada. She will also be missed by her nieces and nephew and their families, Betsi, (Galvin) and Peter Rutan, Caitlin and Peter Andrew, Elk Grove, CA; John and Leslie Galvin, West Sacramento, CA; Kimberly (Galvin) and Robert Garcia and Patrick, Sacramento, CA; Terri (Galvin) Morris and sons, Jeremy, Pine River, Jacob and Anthony Adams, Brook Park.
Annette was born in Cokato and moved from St. Paul Park to Askov in 1951. She graduated from Askov High School in 1958 and went on to pursue degrees in higher education; She earned a B.A. From the University of Minnesota, Duluth (UMD) in 1962; M.A. In psychology from the University of Minnesota in the late 1960s; and a Ph. D from the University of Chicago in 1980. After graduating from UMD, she began her career in education as a physical education teacher in Eau Claire, Wisconsin,and then as a school counselor in St. Louis Park. In 1970, she accepted a teaching position for the Department of Defense, which took her overseas to Rhein-Main Air Base in Frankfurt, Germany. After returning to the states in the 1970s, she became the dean of students at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah, and later, dean of students at St. Scholastica College in Duluth. After completing her Ph. D. She became the assistant to the vice president of athletic affairs at the University of Minnesota before going into private practice as a clinical psychologist.
Annette practiced as psychologist for 20 years; the majority of which was in the Minneapolis/St Paul area, and most recently in Grand Rapids. Annette specialized in working with stepfamilies and was the author of "Stepfamily Life Can Be Hell (But it doesn't have to be) 7 Steps to Recreating Family." On this and other topics, Dr. Brandes was a dynamic, sought after speaker for professional workshops and conferences. During her off time, Annette loved to travel here and abroad. She was an avid reader and writer and enjoyed spending time with her dogs. She will be sadly missed by her friends, family, clients, and colleagues.
A memorial service in Dr. Brande's honor will be held at the Askov Community Center on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m.
