Seldom does a community note the deaths of two members of a family in the same week, and still less frequently does the Angel of Death visit a home twice in such quick succession as in the case of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Blaney, two of Palatka's most highly esteemed residents, who entered upon their final rest with only a day intervening. Early Saturday afternoon Mrs. Mary M. Barnes Blaney succumbed, and at an early hour Monday morning the husband followed her to "the home on the other shore."
Mrs. Blaney was a native of Massachusetts and had just passed her seventy-eighth birth year. In 1892 the family came to Florida, settling in the Georgetown section and engaged in the orange business until the great freeze swept over their grove. Following that calamity they moved to Palatka, where they had ever since resided. Possessing many exalted traits of character, and having resided here for so many years, she was held in the loving esteem of a large circle of friends.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon, the service being held at the grave in Oak Hill East Cemetery, Rev. Donald MacQueen, the Presbyterian pastor, officiating. The following gentlemen acted as pallbearers: Messrs. S. J. Hilburn, C. J. Smith, Thomas Reese, J. W. Darsey, E. W. Warren and C. W. Gilpatrick.
Mr. Horace Blaney, who had also been critically ill with pneumonia for several days, died at 4 o'clock Monday morning, in his seventy-eighth year. Mr. Blaney was one of the best known of the older residents of the county and had a host of friends. The aged couple had been married for over fifty-three years. They only had one daughter, Mrs. I. I. Himes, whose death occurred here a few years ago, while Prof. Himes was principal of the Putnam High School.
The funeral of Mr. Blaney was held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock from his late residence on Emmett street, the interment being made in Oak Hill East Cemetery by the side of the devoted wife, who had preceded him to the final sleep by only a few hours. The service was impressively conducted by Dr. MacQueen, who paid a splendid tribute to the memory of the departed citizen.
The pallbearers were: Messrs. E. W. Warren, C. J. Smith, J. W. Darsey, S. J. Hilburn, G. E. Gay and C. W. Gilpatrick.
Mr. and Mrs. Blaney are survived by their grandchildren, Blaney and Whitney Himes, and Miss Lucille Himes, of West Palm Beach. To these and other surviving relatives is extended the sincere sympathy of the entire community. (Times-Herald Obituary dtd Friday, 7 Dec 1917.)
