Dr. James R. Markle, Sr. YORK Dr. James R. Markle, Sr., 76, died at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday, November 28, 2006, at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown. He was the husband of Helen M. (McTague) Markle with whom he celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary July 7, 2006.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at 11 a.m. at WorkingerSemmel Funeral Home and Crematorium, Inc., 849 E. Market St., York. Officiating will be Mr. Junior L. Aughenbaugh, chaplain of Zeredatha Lodge #451, F.& A.M. There will be a viewing Tuesday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home, with a Masonic service beginning at 10:45 a.m. Dr. Markle was born August 22, 1930, in York. He was the son of the late David A. and Dorothy A. (DeGroft) Markle Dr. Markle retired from the Pennsylvania State Treasury where he had been a Bureau Director for 21 years. He previously worked in the insurance industry, and on three separate occasions, ran for county-wide office. Following his retirement, he continued to do financial planning, had an extensive tax practice, and finally launched a highly successful business, Poetic Portraits, through which he had clients in each of the 50 states and several foreign countries. A perennial student, he attended York College part time for two years and later earned his BS, MS, and LLD from Canterbury University. He was a 1948 graduate of William Penn Sr. High and served in the U.S. Navy at the Naval Air Training Center in Memphis, Tenn. Dr. Markle was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir for many years. He also served on the Board of Deacons, Help Committee, and the Church and Society Committee He was a board member of Catholic Social Services and a member of the unemployment "NOW" Advisory Committee. Dr. Markle was active in Freemasonry for many years. He was a member and Past Master of Zeredatha Lodge #451 F. & A.M.; member and Past Thrice Illustrious Master of York Council #21; member and Past High Priest of York Royal Arch Chapter #199; District Deputy Grand High Priest of District #4 PA Grand Chapter; member of Finance Committee of PA Grand Council; member of Gethsemane Commandery #75; Scottish Rite Consistory, Valley of Harrisburg 32nd degree; Council of Anointed Kings of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; White Rose Scottish Rite Club; Tall Cedars of Lebanon, York Forest #30; Zembo Temple Shrine Harrisburg; York County Shrine Club; charter member of White Rose Consistory Club; and Erin Council #6 Knight Masons. He was also a former member of Rotary International. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by two daughters, Alice K. Twiford, wife of Lester, and Jennifer L. Stouter of Williamsburg, Va.; two sons, James R. Markle, Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, and David A. Markle of West Chicago, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Eric Markle of Tacoma. Wash., Madison and Devynn Markle of West Chicago, Katherine Twiford and Sara Stouter, both of Williamsburg, Va., Vanessa Belcher, wife of John of Killeen, Texas, and Billie Blessing, wife of David serving as missionaries in Africa; two great-grandchildren, Emily and Ryan Markle of Tacoma, Wash.; and his sister, Jane E. Greiss, wife of Robert of York. Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown, One Masonic Dr., Elizabethtown, PA 17022.
