From "Witherspoon Family History" by Evelyn Potter Park

Samuel Witherspoon, son of John Witherspoon, 1720-1805, and brother of William Witherspoon, all of whom came to America ca 1790 from Ireland, but were of Scotch ancestry.

Samuel was probably born about 1760. He was probably married about 1792 to Nancy Agnes Dobbins, whose family also came to America from Ireland at the same time the Witherspoon family came. They settled at Canonsburg in Washington County, Pennsylvania. It is not known whether they went directly to Canonsburg when they emigrated or possibly tarried for a while in the Philadelphia area where they are said to have had relatives. William and Samuel were. brothers and were taxed in 1793 in Chartiers Township, where Canonsburg is located. Samuel was a tailor by trade. Samuel's untimely death occurred in 1805. It is presumed Samuel was buried at Canonsburg, though the exact location is unknown.

Soon after his death, his family moved into the woods of northern Beaver County, where his only son, John, helped his mother rear the family.
