TOLLESBORO -- Arthur Vaughn, 84, departed on his grandest journey with our Lord, Jesus Christ at his side Saturday, April 28, 2007, at Meadowview Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.

Born Aug. 28, 1922, he was four months short of his 85th birthday. He was the son of the late Thomas Gaines Vaughn and Josephine (Lawwill) Vaughn Porter and stepfather Robert Porter. He lived in Mason County throughout his life.

Best known to his friends and extended family as Rusty, he never lived more than 10 miles from his boyhood home in Cabin Creek.

Previously married to the late Edna Gill, Rusty was blessed with one son, Wendell James (Pete) Vaughn who preceded his father in death June 11, 2006. Rusty was then married to Mary Alice Cropper, Oct. 6, 1951, until her death Jan. 7, 1999. This union was blessed with the birth of one daughter, Mary Jo Smith of Maysville.

In addition to Mary Jo, son-in-law Roy Smith and daughter-in-law Billie Vaughn of Cincinnati loved Rusty.

Arthur was blessed with four grandchildren, James (Megan) Vaughn, Steven Vaughn, Tammy Fritz, Jennifer (Jamie) Merz and eight great-grandchildren.

Rusty is preceded in death by three brothers, Elmer Lee "Buck" Vaughn, Raymond "Red" Vaughn and Chancey "Jack" Vaughn.

Arthur leaves behind a very special companion, Sadie Harrison of Maysville.

At the age of 9, Rusty started his lifelong responsibilities by milking cows and farming for neighbors, the late John Hotze and the late Alva Ryan. While continuing to farm he was also employed by Ryan Meat Packing as an mechanic, advancing to meat cutter and Parker Tobacco as a tobacco hauler. In the 1950s, Arthur and wife, Mary owner and operated Vaughn's Service Station and Wrecker Service in Plumville. In 1958 they purchased their farm and began a hard but fruitful life of farming and dairy cattle. After retiring from milking in the mid 1970s, they developed a beef cattle herd. He was never happier than when riding a tractor, working his land. He continued harvesting hay until 2006.
