Gilbert taught school, first in the Township, then taught and was Principal of the school in Aberfoyle, Puslinch, for 25 years. He married Lizzie Salt of Hespeler, but tragically, she died after only two years of marriage. Gilbert later retired to Egremont township, and became active in municipal politics, being both a Councillor, and a Reeve. He was a member of St. Alban's Lodge, and the local chapter of the L.O.L.. He is remembered on this monument to his late wife and her parents, however, he was actually buried by his brother Neil, in Woodland Cemetery, Mount Forest.
