Member of Co A 8th MA Reg't in 1861 and led first volunteers out of Newburyport.
Capt. of Co B 35th MA Reg't in 1862. Shot four times and killed at Antietam near Burnsides Bridge.Newburyport's GAR Post #49 was named for him.
