Private in Company E, 3rd Tennessee Infantry, Union. Captured January 25, 1864 at Loves Creek in Knox County Tennessee with his brother John Greyson Yarnell. He was sent to hospital with variola (smallpox) on April 7, 1864. He apparently recovered and was sent back to prison on April 20, 1864. The last record is him being sent to the "pest house", which is quarantine for the smallpox. Him being immune after recovering from the disease he was probably sent there to help with care of the patients or to bury them.
