Bill was born May 19, 1932 in Wedowee, Alabama, and was the second of eight children born to Kenice and Adele Stevens. While in his early twenties Bill joined the Air Force and served in the Korean War. He was very proud of his service in the Air Force, and for all those that serve their country as well. After his service in the Korean War he relocated from Alabama to California. Bill married the love of his life, Gretta, on November, 26 1971 in Bakersfield, California. Bill worked as a dispatcher and a purchaser at Elk Hills Naval Petroleum Reserve and retired in 1995. Bill loved to fish, especially with his grandchildren, and he made sure that after each grandchild was born they had their own fishing pole. He was also an avid Anaheim Angels fan, a passion that he passed on to his children and grandchildren. Bill was extremely proud of each of his children and his grandchildren and went out of his way to share stories of them with everyone he knew. Bill was a big man, with an even bigger heart who would do anything for his family and always made a point to help others, especially those who were less fortunate. As a member the Tehachapi Valley United Methodist Church he was able to carry out his commitment to helping others. Bill was also a lover of animals, and spent a lifetime adopting and raising a wide assortment of animals. His two dachshunds, Wedowee and Holly will miss him greatly. The family would like to thank the staff at both Bakersfield Heart Hospital and Tehachapi Hospital, for the exceptional care that Bill received before he passed and for the compassion showed to his family as well. The family would like to ask that in lieu of flowers, that a donation be made to the Missions program at Tehachapi Valley United Methodist Church. www.bakersfield.com/obits
