Verda Henderson Hillman Moore, 93, of Boise, ID, passed away peacefully at St Luke's Hospital, November 6, 2012.
She was born on February 7, 1919 in Oxford, Idaho, the eighth of nine children to Calvin Vernon and Rose Violet Fisher Henderson. Verda's early years were spent in Oxford, attending elementary school and later attended high school in Downey, ID, where she played basketball, graduating in 1937. Verda graduated from LDS seminary that same year.
She married Casper (Cap) Paul Hillman, her high school sweetheart, on May 14, 1937 in Ogden, UT. They lived in Oxford for a short time, then moved to Pocatello, where they made their home for the next 30 years, until Cap's death in 1967. They had three children, Patricia Lou and LeRoy Cap and Marie, who was born prematurely and died the same day.
Verda worked throughout her life in a variety of roles, including sales, store management and bank clerk, while Cap was a long-time salesman at the C Ed Flandro Ford dealership. During World War II, she even drove troop transport truck back and forth from the air base in Pocatello. Verda maintained a lifetime membership in the American Business Women's Association.
After Cap's death, Verda moved to Las Vegas and worked for the Bank of Nevada while sharing an apartment with one of her favorite nieces, Teresa (Henderson) Hammond. Verda loved to dance and along with Teresa and other friends spent many nights dancing the night away at the top of the Dunes Hotel.
In 1973 Verda met and married Chessley (Chess) Moore, and along with assisting in raising his youngest son, Richard, Verda helped Chess manage his recreational trailer business (CoachCraft) in Chubbuck, ID.
After their retirement, Chess and Verda spent many years as "snowbirds," traveling throughout the country and Mexico, while spending most winters in Lake Havasu, AZ. Chess also enjoyed dancing, and was a great partner for her on the dance floor. During this time, Chess and Verda developed a special friendship with Bobbie Jones and considered her part of the family.
Chess passed away in 1995, and Verda moved to Boise to be near her son and daughter. Verda was always fiesty and fiercely independent and lived on her own during most of her time in Boise. She was an avid Utah Jazz fan, a trait she shared with her niece, Thedora Peterborg.
Verda is survived by her son, Roy (Pam) Hillman, of Boise; stepsons: Richard (Laura) Moore, of Twin Falls and Steven (Evelyn) Moore, of Sun Valley, NV; grandchildren: Todd (Diane) Kirkendall, of Boise, Jessica (Matt) Larson, of Chatham, NJ, Alexis Hillman, of Boise; Jase Curry-Kirkendall, of WA, Aaron Moore, of NV, Nichole Moore VanHorn and Jake Moore, both of Pocatello, Brandon Moore, of Twin Falls, Emily (Mike) Bauer, of CA; and many beloved great-grandchildren.
Family was very important to Verda and she had many nephews and nieces all of whom were very dear to her. She had a very special relationship with Reva (Al) Taylor of St George, UT. Verda and Chess spent a lot of time with Reva and Al, traveling, exploring and just enjoying the good company.
Verda was the last member of her family's generation as she was preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters, as well as her beloved daughter, Patricia Lou Smith, who died in 2001.
A viewing will be held Friday, November 9, 2012 from 5 to 7 PM at the Summers Funeral Home, 1205 W Bannock Street, Boise, ID, with services Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 2 PM at the LDS Church, 42 Princeton, Pocatello, ID. Interment will be in the Restlawn Memorial Gardens. A reception will be held at the church after the burial.
