Nina Celina Johnson (Juntunen) was born on March 27, 1918, in Holmes City Township, Minnesota, the daughter of Isaac Johnson (Juntunen) and Eva Liisa (Heikkinen) Johnson. She was raised on the family farm and attended school in Holmes City.
On May 21, 1949, Celina was joined in marriage to Wesley Lepisto. The couple moved to Virginia, Minnesota, where Wesley worked in the mines. Celina worked at the Arrow Shirt factory and did cleaning at the medical clinic. Celina and Wes were instrumental in establishing and building the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Virginia.
After returning to the Alexandria area in the early 1970s Wesley and Celina were house parents for Project New Hope. Celina worked in the dietary department at Douglas County, Hospital for about 16 years.
Celina's Finnish heritage was very important to her. She always maintained her ability to read and speak the Finnish language. Cooking and baking were some things Celina did very well. She made excellent cookies and sponge cake. Entertaining family and friends went hand in hand with her skills in the kitchen. No one ever stopped to visit without being offered baked goods and coffee.
On Tuesday, February 17, 2004, Celina died at the age of 85 years. She is survived by her husband: Wesley of Alexandria; two nieces: Alaine Jonnson of Mora; and Alicia Johnson Noyes of Alexandria; one great-niece: Lauren Noyes of Alexandria; and one sister-in-law: Delores Johnson of Alexandria.
A funeral service was held Saturday, February 21 at Zion Lutheran Church with Reverend Terry Finnern officiating. Mertice Brueske and Bruce and Audrey Aga provided the music. Interment followed in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Moe Township. Pallbearers included John Hulkonen, William Hulkonen, Dennis Hulkonen, James Hulkonen, George Legueri and Ralph Jahnke.
Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home.
